Plagiarism Information
On Plagiarism
Northeastern University is committed to the principles of intellectual honesty and integrity and to respecting intellectual property. All members of the Northeastern community are expected to maintain complete honesty in all academic work, presenting only that which is their own work on tests and assignments. The Writing Program in the Department of English is committed to the University’s Academic Honesty and Integrity Policy. Once an instructor finds evidence of plagiarism, she/he is bound by the policy to respond. We aim for a consistent response to the problem of academic dishonesty, and where possible, we first approach plagiarism assuming that it is an error, and that the students needs appropriate instruction.
However, if the instructor determines that an incidence of plagiarism exceeds the definition of error at any point in the semester, that instructor, in consultation with a Writing Program administrator, may fail a student for the course, regardless of whether or not the matter has been sent to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, and regardless of that office’s subsequent finding.
Your instructor will discuss plagiarism in class, and send you to a few internet sites that offer definitions and examples. You are responsible for the content of the sites, and your acknowledgment that you have indeed visited these sites and have read and understood the definitions and examples of plagiarism, is your signature on the “Academic Honesty Agreement” found either in the P&G or the Toolkit.
