Course Placement
All first-year students must satisfy a first-year writing requirement. Students take a placement exam on the first day of classes, or may take an exam online before classes begin.
For the fall term, students must complete the exam by 1 August; for the spring term, by 1 December.
Depending on the results of the placement exam, students may satisfy the requirement in one of the following ways:
- ENG U111, College Writing
- ENG U110, Introductory College Writing, plus ENG U111
- ENG U101, Introductory Writing for Speakers of Other Languages, plus ENG U102, College Writing for Speakers of Other Languages
- ENG U102, College Writing for Speakers of Other Languages
On occasion, depending on performance in ENG U110, the second half of the two-course sequence may be waived, as determined by the Department of English.
Need help deciding if you are ready for College Writing?
If you are a student whose first language is not English (or whose strongest or best language is not English), whether you are an American citizen or an international student, you may prefer to take ENG 101 (Introductory Writing-Speakers of Other Languages), and/or ENG 102 (College Writing-Speakers of Other Languages), which are courses equivalent to ENG 111. Find out what your options are if English is not your first (or strongest) language.
