Choosing the Right Course
You can fulfill your AWD requirement in a number of ways. Your available choices depend on your college; students in some colleges have more options than others.To make the best decision, answer the following questions:
- Am I considering law school?
Students who answer YES should strongly consider ENGL 3311. - Am I planning a career as a teacher?
Students who answer YES should strongly consider ENGL 3313. - Am I an English major?
Students who answer YES, and who are not planning on legal or teaching careers, should consider ENGL 3310, which is restricted to English majors. English majors who are planning on legal or teaching careers should consider ENGL 3311 or ENGL 3313. - Am I a member of the Honors program who is planning to write a thesis?
Students who answer YES should strongly consider enrolling in the Honors-only section of ENGL 3301, which is offered every semester. - Have I participated in co-op or am I planning to participate?
Students who answer NO should consider ENGL 3307, ENGL 3308, or ENGL 3309 depending on their academic major and intellectual interests. Students who answer YES should answer one additional question: - Am I more interested in (A) writing for the workplace or (B) writing for school?
Students who answer (A) should strongly consider ENGL 3301. This course is especially useful for students who have had co-op and who are interested in writing from or toward their co-op experience. Students who answer (B) should sign up for ENGL 3307, ENGL 3308, or ENGL 3309 depending on their academic major and intellectual interests.
- Students in the College of Engineering should take ENGL 3302, Writing for the Technical Professions, ENGL 3303, Writing for the Environmental Professions, or ENGL 3307, Advanced Writing in the Sciences.
- Students in the College of Computer Science should take ENGL 3302, Writing for the Technical Professions.
- Students in the College of Business Administration should take ENGL 3304, Writing for the Business Professions. They may also take ENGL 3301, Writing for Careers in Arts and Sciences.
- Students in the College of Criminal Justice should take ENGL 3305, Writing for the Criminal Justice Professions. They may also take ENGL 3301, Writing for Careers in Arts and Sciences
- Students in the Bouve College of Health Sciences should take ENGL 3306, Writing for the Health Sciences Professions. They may also take ENGL 3301, Writing for Careers in Arts and Sciences.
- Students in the College of Arts and Sciences should take ENGL 3301, Writing for Careers in Arts and Sciences.
